Therapy FAQs
Curiosity is a lovely place to start. Whether you're new to therapy or just wondering if this approach is right for you, it's completely natural to have questions before that first step. I've pulled together the ones I'm asked most often, but if there's something you can't find here, do get in touch, I'm always happy to chat.
Feeling unsure? Start here
-
That's completely normal, and honestly, it's one of the most common things people tell me. Taking the first step can feel like the hardest part, so it's meant to be gentle. The easiest place to start is a free 15-minute chat. There's no pressure and no commitment, it's simply a chance to say hello, ask anything you're wondering about, and get a feel for how I work and whether it feels right for you. You don't need to have it all worked out, or even to know quite how to put it into words. You just need to be a little bit curious. We can take it from there, together, at whatever pace feels comfortable.
-
You're very welcome here, and you're far from alone, a lot of people come to me having tried other things first. Solution Focused Therapy is a different approach, and some people find that difference is exactly what they needed. Rather than revisiting the past or going over what's gone wrong, we focus on where you want to get to and the small, practical steps that move you there. It won't be the right fit for everyone, and that's okay, but if previous experiences left you feeling stuck going over old ground, you may find this forward-looking way of working feels refreshingly different. The free chat is a good, no-pressure way to get a feel for whether it suits you.
-
Your initial consultation is a relaxed, unhurried chance to talk through what's brought you here and what you'd like to feel differently. I'll explain how the approach works, including a little of the science of how the brain changes, so you understand what we're doing and why. We'll start to shape what you want to move towards, and you'll leave with a clear sense of direction and your next steps. There's plenty of room for questions, and nothing is rushed, the first session is as much about you feeling comfortable as anything else.
-
Solution Focused Therapy suits a great many people, and because it's gentle, forward-looking, and doesn't involve revisiting the past, a lot of people find it a comfortable way to work. That said, it isn't the right fit for every person or every situation, and I'd never want to suggest otherwise. Some difficulties are better supported by other kinds of help, and occasionally the most useful thing I can do is point someone towards a more suitable service, your GP, or another professional. If you're not sure whether it's right for you or for what you're facing, the free chat is the perfect place to explore that with no obligation. If I'm not the right person to help, I'll always say so honestly and do my best to guide you in the right direction.
How it works
-
Solution Focused Therapy is a modern, evidence-based approach that helps you move towards the life you want, rather than dwelling on what's gone wrong. Instead of analysing the past, we focus on your strengths, what's already working, and the small, practical steps that build momentum. It draws on positive psychology and modern neuroscience, and it's delivered through two complementary methods: solution-focused conversation (psychotherapy) and guided relaxation (hypnotherapy). The result is an approach that's gentle and forward-looking, structured and short-term by design, and focused entirely on where you want to get to.
-
Hypnotherapy is one of the two methods within Solution Focused Therapy. It uses guided relaxation, a calm, focused state similar to daydreaming, to help your mind take on new, more helpful patterns of thinking at a deeper level. While you're relaxed, the brain is more receptive to positive, solution-focused suggestion, which is why this part of the work can feel so restful and yet so useful. You stay aware and in control throughout. Many people find it the most relaxing part of their week, and a natural complement to the conversation that comes before it.
-
Psychotherapy is the talking side of Solution Focused Therapy, but not in the way people often expect. Rather than revisiting the past or analysing problems, it's a forward-looking conversation about what's going well, what's changing, and the future you want to build. Using carefully framed questions, we gently encourage your brain's natural problem-solving systems and shift your focus from worry towards possibility. It's warm, practical, and surprisingly uplifting, and it sets up the relaxation that follows.
-
They're the two halves of how Solution Focused Therapy works, and they're designed to complement each other. The psychotherapy part is the conversation, forward-looking, practical, and focused on where you want to get to. The hypnotherapy part is the guided relaxation that follows, allowing your mind to absorb those positive shifts at a deeper, more lasting level. Think of it as two stages of the same session: first we talk, building clarity and direction, then we relax, letting that thinking settle in. Used together, they help calm the nervous system, ease anxiety, and reconnect you with your own strengths, more effectively than either tends to on its own.
-
Solution focused hypnotherapy is forward-looking rather than problem-focused. We spend less time analysing what went wrong and more time building towards what you want instead. The addition of hypnosis makes it a uniquely powerful combination, working with both your conscious and subconscious mind to create change that feels natural and lasting. It's also grounded in neuroscience, so you'll understand exactly why what we're doing works.
-
Lovely, mostly. It's nothing like the dramatic version people imagine, you stay aware, in control, and able to hear everything throughout. Most people describe it as a deeply relaxed, comfortable state, a bit like that drifting feeling just before sleep, or being so absorbed in a book or a drive that the world softens around you. You're simply resting in a focused, calm awareness while I guide the session with gentle suggestion. Many clients say it's one of the most relaxing parts of their week, and that they leave feeling lighter and clearer.
-
Most people can experience hypnosis to some degree. It's simply a state of focused relaxation, something you've probably drifted into naturally whilst reading, daydreaming, or watching a film. The depth of trance can vary from person to person, but even a light state is enough for the work to be effective.
-
No, they're very different things. Stage hypnosis is entertainment, carefully designed to produce dramatic effects with a willing audience. Clinical hypnotherapy is a therapeutic tool, used in a safe, calm setting to support genuine, positive change. Think of it less as someone ‘putting you under’ and more as guided, purposeful relaxation that helps your mind do what it's already capable of.
-
Never. Hypnotherapy isn't about handing over control, it's the opposite. You stay aware and in charge throughout, and I can only ever work with what you're genuinely willing to engage with. If something doesn't sit right with you, we simply won't go there. Think of it as a collaboration rather than something being done to you.
-
Only as much as you want to. This is one of the things that makes Solution Focused Therapy feel different, we don't dig back through difficult experiences or analyse what's gone wrong. The focus is firmly on where you want to get to and the steps that take you there. You're always in charge of what you share, and you never have to revisit anything you'd rather leave behind.
What it can help with
-
People come to me with a wide range of challenges such as anxiety, stress, low confidence, sleep difficulties, fears and phobias, feelings of being stuck, and a general sense of wanting more from life. Solution focused hypnotherapy and psychotherapy are particularly well suited to anyone who is ready to make a change but isn't quite sure how to get there.
-
A great many people come to me feeling anxious, stretched thin, or low on confidence, they're among the most common reasons people get in touch. Solution Focused Therapy is designed to help you feel calmer and more in control, and to reconnect with the strengths that stress can quietly chip away at. Rather than digging into what's wrong, we focus on how you'd like things to feel, and take steady steps in that direction. I can't promise a particular outcome, no responsible therapist can, but I can offer a warm, supportive space and an approach a lot of people find genuinely helpful.
-
Yes, and you don't need to be struggling to benefit. Plenty of people come simply because they sense there's more in them and they're ready to find it. Using the same calm, structured approach as my therapy sessions, we work with your natural focus and resilience, easing performance nerves, sharpening concentration, and strengthening the self-belief that sits underneath good performance. Whether you're a competitive athlete, a weekend sportsperson, or someone who wants to get the best out of themselves at work or in life, it's about helping your mind work in its most resourceful state.
-
It varies from person to person, so there's no fixed number, but Solution Focused Therapy is designed as a short-term approach rather than something open-ended. The work is focused and progressive, so it tends not to drag on, and we'll regularly reflect together on how things are going and what's shifting. You're always in control of the pace, and there's no obligation to continue beyond what feels useful to you. We can talk through what's likely to suit your situation at your initial consultation.
