You already have what it takes. Sometimes you just need someone in your corner.

Jen Burt, Solution Focused Therapist

Hello, I’m Jen

I became a therapist because I genuinely believe change is possible for anyone, and that most of us are carrying far more strength than we give ourselves credit for.

For 25 years I worked in the fast paced world of corporate marketing. I built brands and led teams, living with the kind of pressure that doesn’t switch off when you get home. At the same time, I was raising a family and dealing with my own share of change and uncertainty. Somewhere in all of that, I got properly curious about the mind - what holds us back, what pushes us on, and how the way we think shapes what happens next.

Personal development became a bit of an anchor for me. I learned how to handle things more calmly and find some balance when life felt wobbly, even when it would have been easier to stop. That taught me something no training course could - what being stuck actually feels like, and what it feels like like to find your way through.

Looking back, the parts of my career I valued most were always about people. The coaching, the listening, helping someone notice a strength they’d stopped seeing in themselves. Eventually I retrained as a psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, and it's the most rewarding thing I've done.

I trained with the CPHT in Bristol, one of the leading hypnotherapy schools in the country, and I work under regular clinical supervision in line with best practice. In plain terms, that means you get my full care and attention, backed by an experienced layer of professional oversight. I'm proud of that. I'm also enhanced DBS checked, which means I'm able to work with children and young people aged 8 and above, as well as adults.

These days, I help people get their confidence back and feel calmer in themselves. My approach is warm and grounded in evidence, because you deserve a space where you feel safe and properly understood.

I'm still amazed by what the human mind can do. Helping people tap into that is the best job I can imagine.

And the name? Mind&Burt started as a play on words - Burt is my surname - but it also stands in for the body, sitting right alongside the mind. The more I sat with it, the more it fit. The link between mind and body is at the heart of how I work. We tend to treat them as two separate things, but they rarely are.

Small shifts in thinking, big changes in what’s possible.

Outside the therapy room, life's pretty active. There are walks with the dog, keeping fit, and getting out somewhere new, often with music playing. People genuinely fascinate me, but it’s the turning point I love the most, the moment something clicks and someone realises they're capable of far more than they’d thought. I've watched small changes in thinking quietly reshape everything - confidence, direction, a whole sense of what's possible. Watching that unfold never loses its magic for me.

About the approach

The way I work comes down to one simple idea: instead of digging back through what went wrong, we focus on what you want instead.

It's a forward-looking approach, drawing on positive psychology, neuroscience, and techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) - all working together to help the brain build new patterns. That's part of what makes it feel gentle rather than gruelling. There's no reliving of difficult experiences - we work with your brain's natural ability to learn new patterns.

The talking side (psychotherapy) and the relaxation side (hypnosis) work together, giving your mind the chance to take in new ways of thinking at a deeper level. The hypnosis itself is simply a focused, restful kind of awareness. Most people find it genuinely lovely, and a fair bit more uplifting than they were expecting.

What is it?

Solution Focused Therapy is a modern, evidence-based approach. It brings together two things that work well as a pair: solution focused conversation (the psychotherapy side) and guided relaxation (the hypnotherapy side), both drawing on positive psychology and current neuroscience. Rather than focusing on the past, it looks ahead - helping you notice your own strengths and build healthier patterns of thinking.

Within the conversation itself, I also draw on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) - noticing and gently reshaping unhelpful thinking patterns - and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), which looks at how the language we use shapes the way we experience things. Both sit naturally alongside the solution-focused approach, giving you a fuller toolkit for change.

It's recognised by the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH) and the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (AfSFH), and it draws on decades of research in positive psychology, neuroscience, and solution-focused brief therapy - one of the more established short-term therapeutic approaches. All of my work is carried out under regular clinical supervision, in line with professional standards.

"Instead of dwelling on the past, the approach helped me move forward in small, manageable steps. For the first time in years, my mind feels clear and my outlook is positive."

How it works

Conversation

We talk about what's going well, what's already shifting for the better, and the future you'd like to shape. Part of this draws on NLP where you revisit moments when things have gone well, so your mind has a positive state to build from as we move forward.

Building Solutions

Together, we get the brain's natural problem-solving going, using CBT-informed questions to notice and reshape unhelpful thinking, gently moving from worry towards possibility.

Hypnosis

A calm, natural state, a bit like daydreaming. You stay completely in control, while your mind becomes more open to those new, more positive ways of thinking, helping them take hold at a deeper level.

Together, this tends to settle the nervous system and quieten anxious thinking, so you can reconnect with a clearer, steadier sense of yourself.

Reasons people get in touch

People come to me for all sorts of reasons. Often it’s:

  • feeling anxious, stressed, or low

  • confidence and self-esteem

  • difficulty sleeping or switching off

  • overthinking and racing thoughts

  • feeling stuck, or navigating a big life change

  • motivation and reaching your potential

  • performance, in sport, work, or life

  • habits and emotional patterns

  • phobias and fears

  • stopping smoking or vaping.

Whatever brings you here, the aim is the same, to help you feel calmer and more like yourself again.

Why it works

Because Solution Focused Therapy looks at where you want to go rather than where you've been, many people find it a genuinely positive, forward-moving experience. It's designed as a short-term approach, so it tends not to drag on. The blend of calm, clear thinking and deep relaxation helps the mind settle into a more resourceful state, so you can reconnect with your strengths and build a steadier footing for what's next. It suits people wanting to raise their game - in sport, work, or life - just as much as those working through something harder.

A compassionate, empowering pathway

At its heart, this is about giving you the space and the tools to rediscover your own potential. It's a gentle approach, but a powerful one, and the change it creates tends to feel natural and genuinely your own.
