Ready to stop smoking or vaping for good?

How hypnotherapy can help you quit ‍

Nearly everyone who sits down with me wanting to stop smoking or vaping opens with a version of the same line. “I’ve tried before, loads of times, I just can’t seem to make it stick.” Usually with a small wince, as though they’re owning up to a personal failing.

‍So let me clear up the most important thing straight away. The reason it didn’t stick has very little to do with willpower and nothing whatsoever to do with you being weak.

Once you can see what you’ve actually been up against, the whole thing stops feeling like a fight you keep losing, and starts feeling like something you can simply put down.

Why it’s so hard to stop

Cigarettes and vapes get their hooks into you twice over.

There’s the nicotine, which is real enough, though it tends to clear far quicker than people expect once you stop. And then there’s the bigger hold: the habit itself. The cigarette that goes with your morning coffee, the vape you reach for the second you’re stressed, or bored, or stuck in traffic, or just at a loose end. The little ritual that features all the way through your day.

That second part doesn’t live in the thinking, deciding bit of your brain. It lives in the deep, instinctive part - the one that runs things on autopilot so you don’t have to. It’s the same clever system that lets you drive a familiar route and arrive home with barely a memory of the journey, which is marvellous for driving but considerably less helpful when what it’s quietly automated is reach for the vape.

So, every time you’ve tried to stop on willpower alone, you’ve been asking the sensible part of your brain to wrestle a deep, automatic habit into submission, all day, every day. No wonder it’s exhausting, and no wonder it tends to come undone somewhere around day three. You weren't failing, your brain was running the habit on autopilot, and willpower can't out-argue that.

Vaping - same trap, smarter disguise

Vaping turned up dressed as the answer, for plenty of people it genuinely was a way out of cigarettes.

‍But somewhere along the line, “just until I quit properly” quietly became its own thing. Often a stickier one, too, because a vape is always there in your pocket, with none of the natural full stops a cigarette has. No stub, no packet running empty, no nipping outside in the cold. Just an endless, easy top-up.

If you’ve found yourself vaping far more than you ever meant to, and half-wishing you’d never picked it up, you’re in very good company. The way out is exactly the same.

I started vaping to help me give up smoking but then really struggled to give up vaping. The session helped me understand why I was struggling and why I wanted to give up. I haven’t vaped for over 2 months now. Wish I’d done this sooner, both to give up smoking and vaping, as it would have been much easier!

How Solution Focused Hypnotherapy approaches it

‍Most of my stop-smoking and stop-vaping work happens in a single, focused session of up to two hours. There are no weeks of cutting down, no counting, no white knuckling your way through a calendar.

‍The approach is gentle and it looks forwards rather than back. Instead of dwelling on the habit, we spend our time with the version of you who’s already free of it - what that feels like, what it hands back to you, the money, the headspace, the sheer relief of not having to think about it. We talk properly about why now and what stopping really means to you. Because motivation that comes from inside you is worth ten of any stern warning about your lungs.

Then comes the relaxation, the hypnosis part, which, again, is nothing dramatic. No loss of control, no theatrics, just a deeply relaxed, focused state, a bit like daydreaming. In it, your mind is far more open to the change you’ve already decided you want, and we help that autopilot part of your brain quietly update its settings from I’m a smoker to I just don’t do that any more.

I won’t ever promise you a particular result. Anyone who does is overstepping and a great deal rests on how ready you are. What I can tell you is that when someone truly wants to stop, this gives them a real and powerful way to do it, working with the brain rather than against it. Most people are taken aback by how undramatic the whole thing turns out to be.

Who it suits

‍This works best when stopping is something you want - not your partner, not your GP, not the nagging voice of guilt. Some part of you that’s ready to be done. You don’t need a date circled on the calendar. You don’t need to tot up how many times you’ve tried before. You just need to be ready to be free of it.

Stop smoking and vaping help in Gloucester, Cheltenham and online

I offer stop-smoking and stop-vaping sessions online wherever you are, with in-person sessions in Cheltenham coming soon. They’re relaxed and matter-of-fact - no horror stories, no shame, no lectures. We start with how your brain built the habit in the first place, because once that makes sense, letting it go is far more straightforward.

And in the spirit of being straight with you: the NHS offers free stop-smoking support too, and it works well for a lot of people, often brilliantly alongside other approaches. The best method is simply the one that gets you there. I’m always glad to talk through whether this is the right fit.

A free first step

‍Being smoke- or vape-free might be a good deal closer than your past attempts have led you to believe. The easiest place to begin is a free, no-pressure chat, where we’ll talk about where you’re at, what’s worked and what hasn’t, and whether a session would suit you. No commitment, no hard sell.

You’ve probably been wanting this for a while now; this could well be the time it finally sticks.
